125th Anniversary Weekend

Govan Citadel Band’s 125th Anniversary celebrations began over the weekend of 19/20 May 2007 with the visit of two guest soloists from the New York Staff Band, Aaron VanderWeele (euphonium)and Michael Baker (cornet).

The celebrations began on the Saturday night with a Festival of Praise held at the Citadel. The evening was Chaired by Major Rita Pearce from Divisional Headquarters who also soldiers at the corps. Aaron and Michael both featured playing both technically challenging items and also beautiful slow melodies.

The presence of God was felt and many knelt and prayed, rededicating lives to God and to His service. Both Aaron and Michael gave a word of personal testimony about how God has used their musical talents for His Glory.

After the service the band, joined by both Aaron and  Michael, proudly marched the streets of Govan proclaiming that the band and God are still very much alive.  The band invited the corps family for lunch and a time of fellowship followed with the highlight being the superb Centenary cake featuring an edible picture of the present day band!

The weekend came to a conclusion with an afternoon praise meeting, featuring the band and both soloists.

Aaron played “We’ll All Shout Hallelujah” & “Varied Mood”. Michael played “Silver Threads Among The Gold” & “Carnival Of Venice” then again with Aaron joining with him in the duet “Joyous Service” that was specially requested. Following their last item both Aaron and Michael were thanked with a standing ovation led by the bandsmen.

A wonderful time of fellowship, praise and celebration was had by all attending the meetings over the weekend and it was a privilege to welcome so many former bandsmen joining in the celebrations.  The band was also delighted to be joined in their celebrations by the Govan Songsters and YP sections.

Aaron played “You Raise Me UP” & “Better World”. Michael played “Jubilance” & “Love Cannot Fail” then finishing with Aaron joining with him in the duet “Joyous Service”.  The band, conducted by Bandmaster Brian Keachie, was also featured throughout the night bringing Make His Praise Glorious, Salvation Song & Praise To The Lord.

Celebrations continued on the Sunday with a Holiness meeting in the morning thanking God for the faithful service of 125 years of Govan Citadel Band and challenging the congregation and the present band to continue to serve God. The presence of God was felt and many knelt and prayed, rededicating lives to God and to His service. Both Aaron and Michael gave a word of personal testimony about how God has used their musical talents for His Glory.
